Pricing is based on the size of the project, location of the project, and amount of prep work that must be completed prior to sod installation. We work hard to provide the very best value while ensuring a quality install that will provide a healthy lawn for many years. In broad terms, 3,000 sq. ft. of sod (the size of an average suburban back yard) can be installed for $2,500, which includes prep work, and initial fertilization of the new sod.
Genesis Sod Farms offers Fescue and Bluegrass. Both seed varieties grown on our farm are specially blended for Genesis Sod Farms by Jacklyn Seed Company. Our Fescue is a rhizomatous spreading thin blade turf. This turf is perfect for families with kids or dogs because it holds up well to wear and summer heat/drought. Our Bluegrass is specially blended to provide a showcase lawn with a deep dark green color!
Most projects can be completed in a day or less.
Proper watering after installation is the key to success. Our representatives will provide you with a written, easy to follow, detailed plan for the first year.
Sod can be installed any time of the year, including Winter. However, in a perfect world, the best windows for sod installation are Spring and Fall. If your timing does not fit into the Spring or Fall window, not to worry. We will provide written, easy to follow guidelines to care for your sod that adapts to the time of year of your installation!
Sod usually takes two to three weeks to establish roots into the new soil on which it is installed. With proper care, the seams disappear in four to six weeks.
Our small rolls are 10 sq. ft. rolled into 2 ft. by 5 ft. rolls. This is the size DYI customers will want to use. For large projects, installed by our staff, we will use the small rolls for smaller projects. For large projects we use rolls that come in 350 sq. ft. and requires a special machine for installation.
A full pallet of small sod rolls totals 600 sq. ft. (60 rolls). However, we can custom cut smaller amounts when required!
The weight of a sod roll is dependent on the soil moisture in the sod rolls. In the springtime, when there is a lot of rain, individual sod rolls can weigh as much as 100 pounds each. In the summer, when soil moisture is typically at its lowest, sod rolls can weigh as little as 30 lbs.
We recommend not walking on the sod until it has fully rooted into the new soil, typically about two to three weeks.
Do not mow your sod until it has fully rooted into the new soil. This is typically two to three weeks and, we also recommend you care for sod (and whole lawn for that matter) at a mowing height of four inches.
We recommend installing your new sod immediately when it arrives. We do not cut sod in advance. All orders are custom cut to ensure freshness and quality. If you are doing a DIY project, we recommend having all prep work completed and being ready to lay your sod as soon as it arrives.
Yes. We apply a 19-19-19 formulation that provides potassium to help roots establish into the new soil and nitrogen to provide new top growth.
All sod orders are custom cut for each project. We load your sod and deliver it immediately. In most cases, by the time your order arrives to your property, it was harvested within a one to two hour window for when it arrives. For smaller orders, you can pick up you sod at our production facility in Fortville, Indiana. For example, if you request a pick-up time at noon in most cases the sod you will be picking up will be harvested around 11:00 AM.
We guarantee that our sod will arrive lush, full, and established with a full root zone. Anything that arrives less than that we will replace immediately before the sod is installed. After the sod is installed, there is no warranty extended as we are not in control of its grow-in care.
For the first week, the newly sodded area should be watered four to five times per day for 20 minutes each time. After the roots tact-down to the soil, cut the water back to about 10 minutes four times a day. Note that new sod needs more water than established turf in its first year as the root system is not as established. When you notice slight off-coloring of the sod, increase watering times
Usually, new sod needs to be watered to varying degrees for the first two months after installation
Yes. While you want your sod to be very wet for the first two weeks, you don’t want to water so much that you sink into the ground when you step. This is how you will increase the risk of fungus and turf-related diseases on your sod.
Any weeds that may pop through can easily be removed either by hand or with Trimec, which can be purchased at any Lowes or Home Depot Garden Center.
If your sod is installed in an area that is conducive to growing turf grass, with proper care, your sod should never need replacing.
Sod (grass) does not die in the winter. It turns brown because it goes dormant. The crown and roots shut down during the cold months, then as the spring temperatures warm, the crown and roots send nutrients back to the leaf blade, and that is when we see the new green color in the spring!
If your new sod turns brown in August, it is probably due to a lack of not watering it enough. New sod is prone to damage when not watered enough.
Bluegrass has a fine blade and spreads laterally more so than Fescue. However, Bluegrass is less tolerant to heat stress, and established strands will go dormant in late summer. Fescue is a little wider blade, but still a finely textured turfgrass. It is far more tolerant to heat and drought stress than Bluegrass, making it a great lawn turf!
Sod is good for when an instant lawn or turf grass impact is desired. Sod is also superior in erosion control measures.
Yes. The program for your specific micro-environment may vary. We will create a simple and effective treatment program for you to follow free of charge.
One can install sod themselves. We will provide tips for you to prepare your sod area and tips on how to install free of charge. Please note that over about 1000 square feet of sod space, we recommend you hire a professional to install for you.
Many times extra watering will take care of the yellowing problem.
Absolutely! Do not apply more than 1 pound of Nitrogen per 1000 square feet during the installation and grow-in process. More is not better in this situation. After about two months it should be okay to lightly fertilize again. Feel free to ask us to provide a fertilizer schedule for you!
