Sod Installation

Sod installation is a process that provides an immediate green lawn. In this process, strips of pre-grown grass, cultivated by our professional farmers, are installed on the exposed and prepared soil of a yard. The sod typically sets up within 2-3 weeks, delivering an instantly green lawn that can enhance the aesthetic appeal of any property. This efficient procedure is ideal for those seeking immediate results and a lush, vibrant landscape without having to wait for seeds to germinate and mature.

Our mission at Genesis Sod farms is to cultivate top-quality sod and exceptional service to all of our customers, residential or contractor.
Our vision is to be known as the leader in turf grass production.

As a family owned business, we are focused on being the most trusted sod provider for Central Indiana homeowners and professionals.

Sod Installation

The Sod Installation Process

Our dedicated and skilled installation crew will bring your sod directly from our farm to your yard. Choosing Genesis Sod Farms cuts out the middleman of traditional landscaping companies who outsource their turf.

  1. Site Evaluation: Assess the area where the sod will be installed. Check the soil type, sunlight exposure, and drainage conditions.

  2. Soil Preparation: Remove old grass and weeds, if any. Till the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Test the soil’s pH level and amend the soil if necessary.

  3. Grading: Level the soil to ensure proper drainage. The soil should slope away from buildings and towards areas where water can be safely absorbed or drained.

  4. Ordering Sod: Choose the right type of sod for your specific conditions. Order the correct amount based on the size of your area.

  5. Delivery: Coordinate delivery of the sod. Ensure the sod is delivered as close as possible to the time of installation to maintain its freshness.

  6. Installation: Lay the sod as soon as it arrives. Start from a straight edge, such as a driveway or sidewalk, and lay the sod in a staggered pattern, similar to how bricks are laid.

  7. Trimming: Use a sharp knife to trim the sod around obstacles and to fit curved edges.

  8. Rolling: Use a lawn roller to press the sod into the soil, ensuring good contact and helping the roots to establish.

  9. Watering: Water the sod thoroughly immediately after installation. The soil underneath should be soaked to a depth of 4 inches.

Post Installation Maintenance

Post-sod installation maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity and health of your new lawn. After the sod is laid, it is important to water it thoroughly, ideally twice a day for the first week. This helps the sod establish roots in the new soil. After the first week, you can gradually reduce watering to about once a week, depending on your local climate and weather conditions.

Apart from watering, regular mowing is also necessary. Wait until the sod has established strong roots before the first mow, usually about two to three weeks after installation. Remember to mow high, as cutting too short can stress the grass and expose the soil to sunlight, drying it out and promoting weed growth.

Fertilizing your sod is another key aspect of maintenance. Consider applying a starter fertilizer at the time of installation and a balanced fertilizer about four to six weeks post-installation. Continue to fertilize according to the needs of your specific type of grass and local soil conditions.

With these maintenance practices, your new sod will grow into a lush, healthy lawn that you can enjoy for years to come.
