As we transition from summer to fall, it’s the perfect time to give your established lawn some extra TLC. At Genesis Sod Farms, we’ve got you covered with an early fall fertilizer schedule that will keep your lawn looking lush and healthy. Follow our easy steps and your lawn will thank you!
September 1st – September 21st
For optimal results, aim to apply your fall fertilizer between September 1st and September 21st. This timing ensures your lawn receives nutrients as it prepares for the cooler months.
Step 4: Fertilizer, Overseeding, and Aeration (Optional)
To boost your lawn’s health, we recommend a combination of fertilizing, overseeding, and aeration. Here’s your guide:
Fertilizing:
- Fertilizer Type: Use a balanced fertilizer with a 19-19-19 ratio.
- Application Rate: Apply at a rate of 1lb per 1,000 sq. ft.
Overseeding and Aeration (Optional):
- Seeding Rate: Use 10 lbs of fescue or 2.5 lbs of Kentucky bluegrass per 1,000 sq. ft.
- Aerification Timing: Perform aerification between August 21st and September 31st. This process helps improve soil structure and nutrient absorption.
PRO TIP: Complete All Steps on the Same Day
For the best results, perform these steps on the same day. Here’s the breakdown:
- Apply 5 lbs of seed per 1,000 sq. ft.
- Start by spreading half of your total seed evenly across the lawn.
- Aerify Your Lawn (Leave the Plugs)
- Aerifying creates small holes in the soil, improving water, air, and nutrient penetration.
- Apply the Remaining 5 lbs of Seed per 1,000 sq. ft.
- After aerifying, spread the remaining seed to ensure even coverage.
- Apply Fertilizer (19-19-19)
- Follow up with your balanced fertilizer at the recommended rate.
- Water In Thoroughly
- Water the lawn thoroughly to help the seed settle and the fertilizer to start working.
Following this schedule and these steps will give your established lawn the boost it needs to stay vibrant and healthy through the fall. If you have any questions or need further advice, feel free to reach out to us at Genesis Sod Farms Admin@genesisfarms.com or 317.773.2900
