As summer winds down and we gear up for the beautiful fall season, it’s time to give your lawn the care it deserves. At Genesis Sod Farms, we understand the importance of a well-nourished lawn, especially as it prepares for the cooler months ahead. Whether you have a newly established lawn or one that’s in recovery, following our fall fertilizer schedule will set you on the path to a lush, healthy lawn.

August 27th – September 7th

Mark your calendars! The ideal window for fall fertilization is from August 27th to September 7th. This timing ensures that your lawn gets the nutrients it needs right when it’s most effective.

Fertilizer, Overseed, and Aerification

To ensure your lawn thrives, we recommend a combination of fertilizing, overseeding, and aerification. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to get you through this process:

Fertilizing:

  • Fertilizer Type: Use an NPK  fertilizer with a 19-19-19 ratio.
  • Application Rate: Apply at a rate of 1lb per 1,000 sq. ft.

Seeding and Aerification:

  • Seeding Rate: For a resilient lawn, use either 10 lbs of fescue or 2.5 lbs of Kentucky bluegrass per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Aerification: This process helps alleviate soil compaction and allows better penetration of water, air, and nutrients.

PRO TIP: All in the Same Day

For the best results, complete all steps on the same day. Here’s how:

  1. Apply 5 lbs of seed per 1,000 sq. ft.
    • Start by spreading half of your total seed evenly across the lawn.
  2. Aerify Your Lawn (Leave the Plugs)
    • Aerifying will create small holes in the soil, which helps the seed and fertilizer reach the roots.
  3. Apply the Remaining 5 lbs of Seed per 1,000 sq. ft.
    • After aerifying, spread the remaining seed to ensure even coverage.
  4. Apply Fertilizer (19-19-19)
    • Follow up with your balanced fertilizer at the recommended rate.
  5. Water In Thoroughly
    • Water the lawn thoroughly to help the seed settle into the soil and the fertilizer to start working its magic.

By following this schedule and these steps, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, more vibrant lawn. Remember, consistency and proper care are key.
