Commercial Inquiries

Over the past decade, artificial turf has exploded in popularity. Sports complexes, commercial developments, schools, and even homeowners were sold on the idea of “maintenance-free grass” that stayed green year-round. However, in 2026, the conversation is changing, and natural turfgrass is finding itself back in the spotlight. Across the country, municipalities, athletic organizations, landscape professionals, and property managers are reevaluating synthetic turf as new concerns surrounding heat retention, PFAS chemicals, environmental impact, and long-term replacement costs continue to surface. One of the biggest driving forces behind this shift is temperature. During summer months, synthetic turf surfaces can become dramatically hotter than natural grass, creating uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe conditions for athletes, crews, pets, and the public. Natural sod, on the other hand, actively cools the surrounding environment through evapotranspiration, helping reduce heat stress during peak summer temperatures. Environmental concerns are also pushing the conversation forward. Multiple states have started reviewing or implementing restrictions involving PFAS-related materials in synthetic turf systems, while researchers continue studying the long-term environmental impact of runoff, microplastics, and disposal challenges. At the same time, natural turf technology has continued to improve. Today’s turfgrass varieties are more drought-tolerant, more durable, and more efficient than many people realize. Improved fescues, bermudas, and bluegrass blends are being developed specifically for water conservation, traffic tolerance, disease resistance, and lower maintenance needs. Sod producers are also investing heavily in smarter irrigation systems, precision farming technology, and more sustainable growing practices. For landscape contractors and golf course superintendents, this shift creates opportunity.

Clients are asking more questions than ever: What surface stays cooler? What’s more sustainable long-term? What handles heavy traffic best? What makes sense financially five or ten years from now?

Natural sod continues to offer answers that matter: Immediate installation and usability, erosion control, cooling benefits, improved drainage, repairability, and a natural aesthetic that synthetic turf still struggles to replicate.

Even globally, natural grass is receiving renewed attention. The 2026 FIFA World Cup requires natural grass playing surfaces at every host venue, including stadiums that normally use artificial turf. That decision alone says a lot about where the industry conversation is heading.

At Genesis Sod Farms, we believe natural turfgrass still plays an essential role in commercial landscapes, athletic facilities, golf environments, and large-scale landscape projects. As the industry evolves, contractors and turf professionals who understand both sustainability and performance will continue leading the way. And in 2026, natural grass is proving it still belongs at the center of the conversation.
